Please Help Us Identify Members of the Class of 1930

The above photo shows members of the Westmoreland High School Class of 1930. We know their names (see below), and we know the woman on the far left is Mildred (Smith) Clinch, but we need help to identify the others. If you can assist, we'd love to hear from you. Just send us a message using the form below.

1. Raymond Crumb
2. Marjorie Manktelow (married William Starring)
3. Velma Nash (married Charles Emerson Merritt)
4. Franklin Pelkey
5. Mildred Smith (married Raymond Clinch)
6. John Stasaitis
7. Earl Tyler
8. Edna Tyler (married Charles Agey)

In the meantime, here are a few things we've learned about members of the class from Rome Sentinel articles available on Newspapers.com and on Old Fulton New York Post Cards:

  • In the fall of 1928 Marjorie and Mildred made the honor roll, and John, Marjorie, Raymond, and Velma had perfect attendance.[1]
  • In the spring of 1929 Marjorie made the honor roll, and Earl, Franklin, John, and Marjorie had perfect attendance.[2]
  • In April 1930 the class traveled to Washington.[3]
  • Commencement exercises were held at the Congregational Church. Mildred gave the valedictory address; Marjorie gave the salutatory address; and D. F. Searle spoke.[4] Mr. Searle, a Hecla native, was a "noted criminal lawyer" as well as "a psychologist and chess enthusiast."[5]
  • Edna and Velma trained as nurses at Utica's Memorial Hospital.[6]
  • Franklin attended State College for Teachers at Albany in 1935.[7]
  • Earl graduated from Cazenovia Seminary.[8]

Is there something you could add? If so, please let us know!
