Donate Historical Items

Do you have items that help tell Westmoreland's story?

The Westmoreland Historical Society collects unique items that document businesses, events, families, organizations, schools, and more. Here are a few examples of the kinds of items that we are interested in acquiring:

  • Diaries, letters, or personal histories
  • Photographs that document town people and events
  • Advertising materials for town businesses
  • School-related items

Note: The collection policy reflects the Society's limited storage space. For example, we would welcome photographs of a fanning mill that was made in Westmoreland, but we wouldn't be able to accept the item as a donation because there would be no place to store it or display it.

Share Digital Copies

Treasured family documents may hold information that is of value to others. For example, your ancestor's mid-1800s diary might mention births, marriages, or deaths for neighboring families that are not recorded anywhere else. Or your ancestor's photograph of a building that no longer stands might help others to visualize what life was like in Westmoreland in the early 1900s.

If you have records with information that might be of interest to others, e.g., diaries, letters, or photographs, but want to keep the originals in your family, consider donating a digital copy to the Westmoreland Historical Society. A Society volunteer can use a book scanner or a flatbed scanner to digitize your items while you wait. The volunteer will then give you a copy of the file for your own use and, with your written permission, we will also add a digital copy to our research collection.

Check your attics, closets, and garages and let us know what you can share!
